Recent research indicates that 80% of EV owners charge at home at least twice a week. Not only is private charging more convenient, but it’s more cost effective, arguably better for your battery life and helps you future proof your home by increasing its appraisal value.

Can you install an EV charger yourself?

As Australian law prevents unlicensed electrical work, a technician will need to install your EV charger. Even if it wasn’t illegal to do it yourself, most EV chargers on the market usually need to be wired to a meter box by adding a new connection or installing circuit breakers, making it a complicated job.

A flat, solid surface is needed to mount the charger to the wall, and clearance around the area is required.

Chargers with a high IP rating can be installed outside, as they are water and dust resistant. If this is your preference, consider putting the charger within sight of security cameras to deter vandalism or theft.

For apartment residents, your strata manager must be consulted before you install a home charger in a shared facility, even if you own the parking space.

How does your EV model affect the location?

Charging port locations vary based on the type of EV, but typically the port is located near the front or rear quarter-panels. Ideally, the charger should be placed on the same side as the charging port, so the cable can reach the car without stretching or creating a tripping hazard.
